The Italian artist Mario Merz (1925-2003) was imprisoned under Mussolini's regime for his activities in the anti-fascist Giustizia e Liberta group. He initially experimented with a continuous graphic stroke, not removing his pencil from the paper. Shrugging off the yoke of graphic expressionism, Merz and his contemporaries were at the forefront of a renewal of Italian art. Many of his installations incorporated numbers from the mathematical Fibonacci progression defining growth patterns found in many forms of life. Very good .
