Inscribed by Joe Schwartz on the front cover to his good friend and colleague Dave Robbins who inspired him to join the legendary Photo League: "To David Robbins and family - Joe Schwartz 1972".

An introduction by Lorser Feitelson precedes the illustrations. The manuscript for Feitelson's introduction, dated June 4, 1965, is located in the Smithsonian Archives of American Art.

The artist Lorser Feitelson (1898-1978) is known as one of the founding fathers of the Southern California-based hard-edge painting.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, the photographer Joe Schwartz (1913-2013) concentrated on commercial art as a student at Alexander Hamilton High School where he also began experimenting with an inexpensive camera. An activist engaged in street politics, he photographed the condition of the poor and downtrodden. He was inspired to join the Photo League by his friend and fellow photographer Dave Robbins in 1936. As a member of the Photo League, he shared a commitment to portraying the lives of America's working people with fellow League members Sid Grossman, Eugene Smith, Dorothea Lange, and Margaret Bourke-White.

David Robbins (1912-1981) was a Photo League photographer from 1936 through 1951. Fine .
