The lining process used in the restoration provides structural strength to the print. The most common lining papers chosen are Japanese tissues, as they provide excellent strength despite being thin and flexible.
Born in London, the American artist Albert Sterner (1863-1946) attended King Edward's School in Birmingham. He traveled to Germany and then studied in Paris with Jean-Leon Gerome and Gustave Boulanger. Sterner moved to Chicago in 1879 to join his family, including the architect Frederick Sterner, who had preceded him there. He produced lithographs, paintings, and illustrations and in 1885 opened a studio in New York where he produced illustrations for periodicals including Harper's Magazine, Schribner's, and The Century, and Collier's. He returned to Paris to study at the Academie Julian in 1888. Returning to the US in 1918, he taught art at New York's Art Students League. Very good .
