Author: Hollar, Wenceslaus (1607-1677). Title: The Trojans' First Meal in Latium": An Original Etching by Wenceslaus Hollar After a Drawing by Francis Cleyn.
Description: [London: Thomas Warren], [1654]. [1654]. - An original 11-5/8 inch high by 7-7/8 inch wide etching, illustrated with a 10 inch high by 7-5/8 inch wide image etched by Hollar. Latin text from Aenid L.7 added within the plate marks at the bottom is etched by Hollar on either side of a coat of arms. As per Pennington 315, (State 2): Aeneas, with Julus beside him, and his Trojans, are seated on the ground taking their first meal on the shote of Latium. "F. Cleyn inv." and "W. Hollar fecit" are etched within the image at the lower left. Text on the verso, printed in letterpress, is from Ogilby's original 1654 English edition. Closely cropped near the plate marks, the etching is mounted with glue from the verso onto a larger sheet of paper. Except for a thin ink line extending from the very bottom edge of the image into the text, the print is in otherwise near fine condition although the edges of the mount are creased and soiled.
One of a series of original etchings by Wenceslaus Hollar which were created to illustrate scenes from Virgil. They first appeared in 1654 in John Ogilby's "The Works of Publivs Virgilivs Maro Translated, adorn'd with Sculpture, and illustrated with Annotations". The work was published in London and printed for the author by Thomas Warren. Hollar's etchings were after drawings by Francis Cleyn.
Noted for his engravings and etchings, the prolific Bohemian artist Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677) spent much of his life in England.
