A self-taught artist, he went on to teach at Elizabeth College on the island. His paintings of Queen Victoria's visit to Guernsey brought him attention and prints of his paintings of the tour were published in "The Illustrated London News". A prolific artist, he produced over 1,000 works. Naftel moved to London in 1870. His solo exhibition at the gallery of the Fine Art Society was well regarded.
