The poet Darrell Gray was one of the founders of the Actualist movement. Created, largely it is said as a spoof, the movement took root and included such figures as Anselm Hollo, Dave Morice, Allan Kornblum and George Mattingly, among others. Having given this movement its name, "Actualism", Darrell Gray wrote "The Actualist Manifesto" which appeared in Gum No. 9. Together with Morty Skylar, Gray subsequently edited "The Actualist Anthology" laying out the tongue in cheek principles of the movement. Actualism flourished after Gray moved to San Francisco in 1975 and in the following years, six Actualist conventions were held in the Bay Area. Gray died in 1986 after a long struggle with alcoholism.
