A Christmas story, "Going Home" is the tale of a Mexican-American family's trip to visit family in Mexico. Although Carlos and his sister were born there, they have grown up in the US and their grandparents' Mexican village does not seem like home. The story asks the question as to whether home can be a place you don't remember. Carlos is slowly drawn into the festivities by his family and the warmth of the villagers and comes to realize that home can be anywhere as it lives in the hearts of the people who love you.
David Diaz worked for the sculptor Duane Hanson for several years. After graduating from Ft. Lauderdale Art Institute, he moved to southern California and worked for graphic design companies before establishing his own design and illustration business, Diaz Icon. "Smoky Night", his first picture book, was awarded the 1995 Caldecott Medal. Very good .
