William Lyon Phelps [1865-1943] was an American author, critic and scholar. He earned his Ph.D. from Yale in 1891 and, after a year teaching at Harvard, taught in the English Department at Yale until his retirement in 1933. He was Yale University Lampson Professor of English Literature and taught the first American university course on the modern novel. He had a radio show, wrote a daily syndicated newspaper column, lectured frequently and published numerous books and articles. Very good .
