The American science fiction & mystery writer Edwin Balmer (1883-1959) began his career as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune before writing his first book. He co-authored "When Worlds Collide" and "After Worlds Collide" with Philip Wylie. The first of these novels was made into the 1951 award-winning movie directed by George Pal. Working with the artist Marvin Bradley, Balmer helped create the comic strip "Speed Spaulding" which was partially based on his novels. Balmer co-authored the short story collection "The Achievements of Luther Trant", and wrote several detective novels. An editor of Redbook from 1927 through 1949, he subsequently became associate publisher of the magazine and encouraged young writers by commissioning them to flesh out the strong story lines he was known to invent for publication in the periodical.
