First edition, with an introduction by Maurice Lubin. The Haitian writer Renee Marie-Ange Jolicoeur [1947-1976] was a poet and musician who was born in Jacmel and wrote her first poem at the age of eight. She produced three volumes of poetry: "Guitare de vers" [1967], the present volume and "Oiseaux de memoire" [1971-72]. In her poem "Je Suis", Jolicoeur describes herself as a charming Creole girl from Jacmel who is in love with her country. Jolicoeur died at Lille in France at the age of twenty-nine. Maurice Lubin [1917-1999] was a Haitian author and teacher and a historian specializing in the history of demography. Lubin expressed concern for the difficulties of women writers in Haiti. There were few women writers in Haiti's past. For the most part women studied music, painting and decorative arts and if they did write, they published their works under a pseudonym. Lubin commented "It was not until 1943 that the foundation of the Lycee de Jeunes Filles brought secondary education within the reach of our sisters and daughters." The text is in French. Rare. Very good .
