The British liberal politician James Kitson, 1st Baron Airedale (1835-1911) was initially a member of Parliament and subsequently appointed a peer. Kitson ran Gladstone's electoral campaign and supported Irish home rule, education and old age pensions. The first Lord Mayor of Leeds, he was a member of the Institution of Civil engineers and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, he was a supporter of the Mechanics Institute and Yorkshire College (later the University of Leeds). His home Gledhow Hall was the subject of a painting by J.M.W. Turner and William Morris designed a window for the Unitiatiran church's Mill Hill Chapel, frequented by Kitson, which he dedicated to Kitson's mother Ann. Very good .
