Rolf Schwendter [1939-2013] was an Austrian writer and social scientist born in Vienna. He studied jurisprudence, political science and philosophy and earned doctorates in all three disciplines. From 1968 to 1970 he was a singer-songwriter, publishing songs and taking part in music festivals. He emphasized "anti-aesthetics" that would focus attention by disrupting familiar listening habits. He held various academic posts and was a central figure in alternative movements in psychiatry, sociology and the arts, including music and theatre.
