"Michael J. Ryan was born in 1949 in Philadelphia. In 1975, he entered a recovery program for alcoholism and was diagnosed as manic-depressive. Determined not to succumb to addiction and mood swings, he embarked on a self-imposed campaign to counsel homeless alcoholics. / In his work, Ryan depicts his darkest feelings and experiences; some are apocalyptic, while others refer directly to his life on the streets." [From a biography by the Andrew Edlin Gallery].
