Sir Edward Thornton [1817-1906] was a prominent British diplomat who held posts in Latin America, Turkey, and Russia and served for fourteen years [1867-1881] as Minister to the United States. While Secretary to the Legation in Mexico City, he was active in forwarding the conclusion of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, which ended the Mexican-American War. In 1871, during his American appointment, he served as a member of the commission on the Alabama Claims and in 1873 served as an arbitrator in the commission on the Mexican and United States Claims.
