The German Soprano Lotte Leonard (1884-1976) [aka Charlotte Levy] emigrated to America during World War Two. She was the Soprano soloist in Handel's "Israel in Egypt" at La Scala in 1928 and soloist in Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis" at Salzburg in 1931.
The American-born contralto Sandra Cahier (known as Madame Charles Cahier) (1870-1951) was associated with Malher and sang in the premiere of "Das Lied Von der Erde" in 1911. She sang at the MET from 1912 through 1914 and taught at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Among her students was Marian Anderson. She advised Lauritz Melchior to change from a baritone to a heldentenor.
The German tenor Karl Erb (1877-1958) was considered by many to be the ideal Evangelist in Bach's "St. Matthew Passion".
The Austrian baritone Hans Duhan (1890-1971) sang in 3 important premieres: "Ariadne auf Naxos" by Richard Strauss, as Harlequin; in "Jonny Plays On" by Ernest Krenek, as Daniello; and in "Giuditta" by Franz Lehar as The Duke. He sang several times at the Salzburg Festival from 1922 until 1937, and was the first Pagageno there.
