Title: Original Pen-and-Ink Sketch Inscribed and Signed by British Painter and Printmaker George Soper.
Description: Welwyn, Herts. U.K.: 1932. 1932. - Original pen-and-ink sketch in the bottom left corner of a slip of stiff cream paper, approximately 2-3/8 inches high by 5-1/8 inches wide. Inscribed and signed in black ink,: "With Greetings / from / George Soper." Together with the recipient's self-addressed envelope. Near fine.

The self-addressed envelope supplied by "Master Richard Glasser" bears a 1932 postmark from Welwyn, Hertfordshire, which is where Soper's studio was located. Soper generously sends this presumably young boy a beautiful little original sketch of a man on horseback, leading a second horse and trailed by a dog. The sketch is a version of Soper's etching "Going to Work" [c. 1926].

George Soper [1870-1942] was a British painter and printmaker. The son of a horticultural sundriesman, he was born in South Hornsey, Middlesex and began his artistic career at the turn of the century as an illustrator, eventually turning to painting and printmaking. His work revolved around rural subjects and the rural environment. He was elected an associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1918 and became a full member two years later. Very good .
