Australian composer, pianist and teacher Ernest Hutcheson [1871-1951] is here portrayed playing the piano. The photo is by Apeda Studio, N.Y.
Hutcheson was born in Melbourne and toured there as a child prodigy. He studied and taught in Germany, moving to New York before the outbreak of World War I. He became the Dean of Juillard School [1926-1937] and then its President [1937-1945]. He was also associated with the Chautauqua School of Music where he provided a refuge for George Gershwin at a very stressful point in the composer's life, giving him time and seclusion to complete the Piano Concerto in F. Hutcheson wrote piano concertos and many solo piano pieces and was the author of an important book, "The Literature of the Piano". Very good.
