The Rothstein photographs are quintessential images of American life. Each is reproduced with Saroyan's commentary and meditation on the image on the facing page. Saroyan writes in his introduction: "Putting words to pictures may seem a funny business, but that is precisely what man has done from the beginning--that is how he made everything he did in fact make, and how he came to find, measure, and try to understand everything else. New pictures impel new words, new variations of words. One picture is worth a thousand words. Yes, but only if you look at the picture and say or think the thousand words. Very good .
