Laid in is a wonderfully heartfelt letter signed "Jack M." to literary critic Oscar Cargill. The letter, which is typed on Ohio University letterhead, thanks Cargill for taking the time to write and tell him that he liked ""Beyond the Bridge" and especially for stating specifically what he liked in the book. "It is having an uneven career, at this time, through the valley of reviews (there is a mixed metaphor there that I can't seem to resist at this early hour of the morning) .. there have been grumpy ones, puzzled ones, and one or two fine ones--along with several statements that help sustain me in these times of trial. Yours belongs to the last category, it goes without saying; and I cherish your praise.." An ink asterisk refers to a P.S. penned below his signature: "Most painful of all, however are the 'no-ones'."
Jack Matthews [1925-2013] was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, playwright and former professor. He was an avid book collector and many of his treasured finds served as a basis for his essays and the historical subjects he explored in his fiction. Very good .
