SIGNED BY THE ARTIST RANDALL ROSENTHAL - sc - An original 25-1/2 inch high by 20 inch wide color poster protesting construction of a highway in the Southampton community of Water Mill, NY illustrated with Randall Rosenthal's "Any Weekend". The illustration depicts cars of various colors raining down from the sky to crash into a huge pile below covering all that one can see into the distance. The text, boldly printed below the image, reads: "Halt the Highway / Join the Fight to Keep What's Left / Plan the Alternatives Inc. Water Mill, N.Y." The poster is signed by the artist, Randall Rosenthal, in pencil under the image. There are minor faint creases to the edges.
A surfer and artist, Randall Rosenthal had early success when Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol showed up at his first major art show and showered his work with acclaim. Unwilling to sell out when the art market slowed down, he set out to get a "real job" as a carpenter. The pull of creating art was still strong and, using the skills he'd developed working with wood, he was drawn back into the art world as a sculptor.
The small resort community of Water Mill, NY, a Long Island hamlet in the town of Southampton was, in 2010, listed as the 14th most expensive zip code in the US and is home to many celebrities. Needless to say that plans to expand the highway did not go over well at the time. Very good .
