Proof copy of the first American edition.
Laid in is a typed letter signed from Wray to Peter Matthiessen. Wray recalls a meeting with Matthiessen when Matthiessen visited Oberlin College. "..Though we spoke very briefly the conversation was a very significant one for me, as it demonstrated that novelists are in fact living breathing human beings, if perhaps of a more sophisticated subspecies..One of the fruits of that conversation, which had next to nothing to do with writing, was that I began to think that I might with time and luck become a novelist myself.."
Also laid in is a letter from the publisher to Matthiessen, enclosing this advzance copy of the book. Very good .
