The American author and journalist Michael Hastings (1980-2013) was a reporter for BuzzFeed and a contributing editor to Rolling Stone. He rose to prominence for his coverage of the war in Iraq for Newsweek. His first book "I Lost My Love in Baghdad" is a biographical memoir of his relationship with his fiancee Andi Parhamovich and of her tragic death when her car was ambushed in Iraq. His 2010 Rolling Stone profile of General Stanley McChrystal "The Runaway General" cost the General his command. Hastings subsequently elaborated on his earlier travels with McChrystal in his 2012 book "The Operators". A critic of the NSA's domestic surveillance program, Hastings had e-mailed his colleagues that he was being investigated by the FBI shortly before his death in a motor vehicle accident on the morning of June 18, 2013.

In our opinion, Michael Hastings, apart from being a fine writer, was one of the most important and courageous journalists of our time.
