Illustrated in black & white with 10 plates, including a frontispiece & a folding plate in the rear, and with textual illustrations, after photographs, drawings & paintings by the author & others. There is occasional light foxing. Very good.

An account of a visit by George Sand and her children, accompanied by Chopin, to Mallorca in the winter of 1838-39. They stayed in the historic monastery, Cartuja de Valldemosa, confiscated from the monks in the revolution of 1836. Unfortunately for Sand's sickly son Maurice for whom she was seeking a warmer climate [and for Chopin himself], the winter was cold and stormy, marked by persistent rain, high winds and fog.
