In this unusual portrait, the face is composed of a swirling assemblage of figures -- a man on horseback with his cloak flying out behind him, a naked female, a crowned king, a masked figure, a man in a scholar's cap with a woman in a bonnet and gown [perhaps characters from Goethe's works].
