A rare portrait of the President.
Elizabeth Shoumatoff was the painter of "the unfinished portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt". A friend of Lucy Rutherford's, Elizabeth Shoumatoff, had been commissioned to paint a portrait of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Sketching the president as he chatted and read papers, Shoumatoff initially painted a small portrait of the President. It was agreed that the President would sit for her again at a later time and that she would then paint a much larger portrait. She was invited back to Warm Springs Georgia and arrived on April 9th, 1945, to spend the weekend and paint the larger portrait. At noon on April 12th, 1945, as she sketched and painted, the President reached for his head compaining of a terrible headache, collapsed and lost consciousness. FDR was pronounced dead at 3:35 p.m. Very good .
