"Historically machines have often been regarded as toys, or agents of magic, marvel, and fantasy..The story of how artists in this century have looked upon and interpreted machines is highly dramatic. Their attitudes have ranged from deepest despair to devotion and even idolatry. It should be noted that such extreme positions have been taken by artists who are among the most significant of our time.." [From the introduction by K. G. Pontus Hulten]. Very good .
