Ernst Josephson [1851-1906] was a Swedish painter and poet from a prominent Jewish family. His paintings were mainly portraits and depictions of folk life. Josephson had a troubled life. He contracted syphilis at a fairly young age, and in 1888 became mentally ill. He was later diagnosed as a schizophrenic, but continued working throughout his illness, often while in a trance-like state. He died at the age of 55.
