Allen & Co. 116 Nassau Street, 1851. 1851. - Octavo, three-quarter gilt-ruled black calf & black paper covered boards titled in gilt between raised bands & gilt rules on the spine. The binding is rubbed & bumped with small areas of the leather rubbed away. There is staining to the front cover & spine & the head & tail of the spine are chipped. Title & 190 pages; and title & 188 pages. Profusely illustrated in black & white with 1 plate, head-pieces and full-page & textual woodcuts. There is an owner's stamp on the front endpaper with an earlier owner's heavy ink signature on both sides of the endpaper. There is scattered light foxing & occasional staining. The top page corners are bumped & there is light creasing to the upper halves of the leaves. Good only.
January-June, 1851 and July-December, 1851, complete, bound in one volume.
Two of the full-page illustrations in Part 2 are views of New Orleans. There are also a number of splendid engravings depicting animals and birds--the zebra, the hippopotamus, the coney, the bittern and the pelican, as well as a leopard, a monkey and Arabs with a camel. Good .
