RICA (Researches in Campanian Archaeology) states in an introductory list of translations it has issued, that these translations are of articles and documents relating to Campanian archaeology which are not generally familiar to scholars in the field. "A few of these we have distributed from the United States to a selected group of interested institutions with the traditional compliments of the University of Texas at Austin". This copy has mounted on the front pastedown the book label of The Van Der Poel Collection of Campanian Archeology. ["Campanian" refers to a stage on the geologic time scale].

Leppman's paper, which was presented at the Modern Language Association of America conference in Chicago in December 1963, was published in The German Quarterly, Volume XXXVII Number 3, May 1964, a publication issued by the American Association of Teachers of German, Appleton, Wisconsin.

Leppmann writes that Goethe visited Pompeii and comments that in "Italienische Reise" "Goethe has described his impressions of Pompeii and Herculaneum so concisely that they can be reproduced here without abridgement". The excavations at Pompeii had begun only half a century before Goethe's visit.
