Paul van Ostaijen [1896-1928] was a Flemish poet and writer. His nickname was "Mister 1830", because of his habit of walking along the streets of Antwerp dressed as a dandy from the year Belgium became separate from the Netherlands. Though his style was very much his own, his poetry showed influences of Modernism, Expressionism, Dadaism and early Surrealism. He was an active flamingant, a supporter of Flemish independence. Because of his involvement in Flemish activism during World War I, he had to flee to Berlin, a center of Dadaism and Expressionism, where he met many other artists. After he returned to Belgium, he opened an art gallery in Brussels. He died of tuberculosis in March 1928, only a month after the publication of this magazine.
