An addendum to the preface dated 1925 states that the author originally collected the material in this book for an address he had been asked to deliver at the formal opening of the new Assay Office: "Owing to the great loss of life due to the explosion of a bomb in September, 1920, and the consequent delay in the completion of the building under another superintendent the new edifice was opened without ceremony."
