Description: London, J. Thane, 1791. Hardcover. Oblong 4to. Bound in original half leather over marbled boards. Each engraving is tinted, set within a decorative frame, and has accompanying explanatory text in French and English. The front board of our copy has detached, but is present. The title page, and the blank succeeding page are detached, but present, although chipped at the edges. All plates are present: 50 engraved landscapes and six engraved sets of heads of the painters whose work has been reproduced. The contents are tightly-bound and unmarked, quite free of the usual foxing, although with off-setting of the engraved image to the facing (blank) page. The rear board shows wear, but the joint is holding. Priced with all faults. Zentner (1747-1818) was born in Germany although the exact dates of his birth and death are uncertain. Even his Christian names are unknown and there are references to him as L. A. Zentner and J. L. L. C. Zentner. From his prints it seems that he was in Paris in 1780-1785, and in London in 1791. He etched a series of fifty plates of landscapes after old masters, plus six sheets of heads of painters. The plates were originally issued in parts and include renditions of works by Pierre Jean Van Asch, Paul Bril, Jean Breughel, Louis Backhuysen, Corneille Dusart, Adrian van Diest, Jean van Goyen, Pierre Paul Rubens, Rembrandt van Ryn, Titian, Adrien de Vries, Anoine Waterloo etc. .
