De Peyster (1821-1907) was an author, philanthropist, and early Adjutant General of the New York National Guard. He served in the New York State Militia during the Mexican-American War and American Civil War. He was one of the first military critics and noted for his histories of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and also published works of drama, poetry, military history, and histories of Dutch Americans. The first pamphlet in this little book is entitled: 'History of the Menapii: The Ancient Zeelanders and Dutch Flemings and Brabanters: and of the Rise and Progress of the Saro-Germanic-Netherlandish Confederation (Menapio-Frank Association), known under the generic title of 'Franks' or 'Freemen'.' It consists of 64 pages, but appears to lack the last few pages. There is an old tide ring to the bottom half of the text, which is otherwise tightly bound and clean. .
