Description: London, Printed for John Stockdale, 1811. Hardcover. Royal 8vo. Three volumes, uniformly bound in full green leather. The text of the plays is set double-column. The bindings are quite handsome but now somewhat worn and a bit soiled. All edges are gilt and the endpapers are marbled. Internally, the volumes are tight, and there is a bit of age-toning, but otherwise the text is quite clean and bright. Offered at a fraction of the price for the four volumes. Published as a four volume set: our offering consists of volumes II, III, and IV - only. The preliminary material of volume II (pp. civ, 585) includes lives of Beaumont and Fletcher, prefaces, commendatory poems, 'Verses on an Honest Man's Fortune', Beaumont's Letter to Jonson', and the last editor's preface. The remainder of the text includes 16 plays and an engraved frontispiece of Beaumont. Volume III (pp. 624) also contains an engraved frontispiece, but of John Fletcher, and eighteen plays. Volume IV (pp. 607) does not have a frontispiece. It contains nineteen plays, including 'The Woman's Prize; or, The Tamer Tam'd', 'The Coxcomb', 'The Woman-Hater'. Curiously, the volume statement under the heading 'Contents' of volumes III and IV do not correspond to the volume statement on the last page of each of these two volumes, e.g. in volume III, under the 'Contents' heading, is the designation 'Volume the Third'; yet at the end of the book it is stated 'End of the Second Volume'. Similar circumstances obtain for the fourth volume, ceteris paribus. Due to the size, and weight, of these three books, it might be best to enquire, first, as to costs, and options, to ship.
