Our set is handsomely bound in quarter crushed morocco over grey cloth, and both volumes settle nicely into a felt-lined slipcase. Volume I is inscribed to J. Christian Bay. Each volume shows only the slightest evidence of shelf wear; the slipcase a bit more. Claudius (1740-1815) was a German poet, who used the nom-de-plume of 'Asmus'. His poem 'Death and the Maiden' was used by Schubert in 1817 for one of his most famous string quartets. Claudius's collected works were first published in eight volumes from 1775 to 1812; and last published in two volumes in 1902 (our offering). Ill.: black-&-white illustrations.
