Title: The Wonder
Description: New York City,, George H. Doran Company, 1917. Hardcover. pp. 311.Small 8vo,,Bound in original black cloth with gilt lettering and designs,John Davys Beresford (1873-1947), the father of Elizabeth Beresford (author of the 'Wombles' and 'Magic' series), was a prolific writer of literature, essays, biographies, and fantasy literature. Bleiler lists eleven titles in the latter category, including this title (The Check-List of Science Fiction and Fantasy, p. 21), which was Bereford's first fantastic novel. It was first published in England in 1911 under the title 'The Hampdenshire Wonder'. Curry incorrectly lists the 1921 Putnam's edition as being the first American edition, but that designation is clearly in error, as this title was published in America four years earlier, entitling it to be called the first American edition. Brian Stableford calls this title 'one of the great scientific romances' (Bleiler: 'Supernatural Fiction Writers', I, 458). Our copy is a bit bumped at the tips. The spine is lightly crinkled (perhaps a production defect) and the gilt lettering thereon is somewhat worn, although legible. The gilt lettering and design to the front board is bright and unmarred. There is a touch, or two, of soiling and scuffing to the boards. The endpapers are clean and tight, and the contents are particularly clean and bright. Altogether, a very nice copy in very good condition. No dust jacket. The first American edition.
