Author: WHITE, Stewart Edward Title: Gold
Description: Toronto, Musson Book Company, ND. Hardcover. pp. vii, 437. 8vo. With four colour plates, and black-and-white drawings, by Thomas Fogarty. The last fifteen pages have a small closed tear near the centre of the top margin (not more than one half inch). Except for a touch of wear to the tips of the boards, and a trace of soiling to the foredges, our copy is as bright and crisp as the day it was purchased. The pictorial design to the front board, blocked in red, black, green and gilt, is virtually perfect. The original dust jacket is scuffed, chipped, and creased. There are several small open tears to the top edge, and some light soiling. Overall, about good minus condition. Ill.: Thomas Fogarty illustrations. The frontispiece is amusing: it shows two half naked men, one on the floor in front of the other, who leans over to say: ''I told you you couldn't lick me,' said he'. At the end of the book is a thirteen-page 'little chat about the man [White] and his books' by Eugene F. Saxton. This title was first published by Doubleday, Page & Company in 1913, and reading copies are not particularly hard to come by. Our copy is the first Canadian edition, with a Canadian title page, and 'Musson' to the base of the spine, but otherwise virtually identical to the first U.S. edition. No date of publication is shown, but there is a former owner's ink inscription on the blank page, opposite the half-title page, bearing the date of 1914.
