Priestley (1886-1974) joined the 1907-1909 British Antarctic expedition led by Sir Ernest Shackleton, and contributed geological sections to Shackleton's THE HEART OF THE ANTARCTIC (1909). He later joined Scott's ill-fated second expedition, out of which he published (in 1914) this volume, an account of the two winters (1911 and 1912) he, and his scientific team, spent in the Antarctic environment. In 1920, he helped Frank Debenham found the Scott Polar Research Institure at Cambridge. .
