Nicely bound in 3/4 calf with marbled boards and foredges.Thomson (1700-1748) was a Scottish poet, who was educated at Edinburgh University. He wrote verse for the EDINBURGH MISCELLANY and went to London in 1725, where he met Gay, Pope and others. In 1726, he published the first title ('Winter') in his famous magnum opus THE SEASONS. According to the Concise Dictionary of National Biography (p. 2968), 'THE SEASONS first challenged the artificiality of English poetry, and inaugurated a new era by their sentiment for nature.' This is the first edition of Thomson's Works under the editorship of Gilfillian, and it contains all of Thomson's important work including THE SEASONS, LIBERTY, THE CASTLE OF INDOLENCE and BRITANNIA. Bds. scuffed at extremities, contents a bit age-toned, o/w clean & tight. Overall, a handsome book in good plus condition. .
