He is best known for, in April 1909, leading an expedition that claimed to be the first to have reached the geographic North Pole. Peary's claim was widely debated along with a competing claim made by Frederick Cook. The narrative of Peary's expedition of 1908-1910 contains its organization, personnell, the voyage, the Roosevelt's passage through the ice of Smith Sound-Robeson Channel and winter quarters at Camp Jesup, Cape Sheridan, north Ellesmere Island. - A fine copy.Arctic Bibl. 13230.
