Title: Hr.Ms. fregat Koningin Emma der Nederlanden, a fully rigged sailing ship (three-master) with steam power, of the Dutch navy.
Description: Original oval pen drawing, dated 1879, signed W.C.B. Ca. 7 x 15,5 cm. Fine image from the end of the sailing time, at the end of the 19th century when the propulsion of ships changed from sail to steam. The new steam propulsion was not yet so advanced that people dared to build pure steam ships. Hybrid ships were built so that people were not entirely dependent on the new technology. The Queen Emma had more than 300 crew members. See Alle Hens juni 1949, pag. 6-8 contains a fascinating account of one of the previous crew members.
