They went by train to Marseille, by French mail service to Alexandria, and from there the overlandroute by train to Suez, and further by ship to Singapore and Batavia. Frans Lebret (1820-1909) made during his stay numerous drawings and paintings, depicting landscapes, people and Javanese antiquities.
