(8),215 pp. First edition published in 1860. - Van Hoëvell asked for a voluntary discharge because he had been branded as 'suspect' in the Dutch East Indies. He wrote a pamphlet dealing with these events, but also based one of his novellas on them. It is called 'The Suspects', written in 1858, and was included in his volume About life in the Indies (Uit het Indische leven, 1860). It is one of his best works, and has remained relevant to this day. At once recognizable is the pattern it describes of an authoritarian society (Nieuwenhuys, Mirror of the Indies, p.62). Cat.
