All other missionaries present in China during that period had been sent by a missionary society. Gützlaff operated in China independently of those organizations. He was an adventurous, sometimes somewhat reckless man with an often controversial strategy. In the period between 1830 and 1850 he was an important factor in the then existing community of traders and missionaries in China. His books were an inspiration to others to pursue missions, Cordier, BS II, col 1308.
