(12),280; 385,(12) pp. Cornelis de Witt (1623 - 1672) and Johan de Witt (1625 -1672), were the leading figures of the Dutch Republic. They were murdered by Orangists on August 20, 1672, after which their corpses were mutilated. The double murder is one of the most memorable in the history of the Netherlands.- (Age-browned).
