His voyages marked the beginning of British scientific exploration of the Pacific. Countries visited are in America the West-Indies, Chili, Peru, Mexico, Brazil (including the earliest written description of Bahia), in Africa the Cape of Good Hope, Isles of Cape Verd and in Asia the Dutch East Indies, the Philippines and Formosa, Australia and various islands in the Pacific. 'Generally regarded as the greatest explorer and navigator before Cook, Dampier was also a popular and an exciting storyteller who inspired both Swift and Defoe. His books went through many editions and, in some form, have remained in print untill the present day' (The Davidson Collection 32).
