During his tragically short life he rose to command a company of the 52nd Light Infantry on the Somme. Having won the Military Cross he as mortally wounded and spent an agonising month dying of his wounds. It is unusual to have a contemporary account of a soldier's time in hospital." Warner was lost in the first night attack of the Great War at Richebourgh L'Avoue on May 15th/16th 1915. He vanished early in the attack and his body was never found. Cornwallis John Warner was the second son of Sir Thomas Warner M.P of Brettenham Park. Warner's name appears briefly in these pages. He was a decent young man" to reverse of front free endpaper.
