Author: ROSE, MICHAEL. Title: Curator of the Dead. Thomas Hodgkin (1798-1866). Doctor and Campaigner for Human Rights.
Description: London: Peter Owen, 1981. 072060527X. 1st edition. "In 1837 Thomas Hodgkin stood on the threshold of a brilliant medical career. As Lecturer in Morbid Anatony and Curator of the Museum at Guy's Hospital Medical School, Hodgkin was recognised as the outstanding English pathologist of his day; he had already described the condition which was later to be known as 'Hodgkin's Disease'. When the post of Assistant Physician fell vacant at Guy's, Hodgkin was the obvious candidate. His application was rejected.." One obstacle to his progress, says Rose, was the Treasurer and virtual owner of Guy's Hospital Benjamin Harrison. "Harrison was a board member of the Hudson's Bay Company and was angered by Hodgkin's outspoken criticism of the company for its exploitation of American Indians. The Hudson's Bay Company gave guns and alcohol to the Indians in exchange for furs, which brought large profits to the company. Their divergent views placed Harrison and Hodgkin on a collision course that exploded in 1837. The result of this confrontation was a tragedy for Hodgkin and an irreplaceable loss for Guy's".(ncbi). Pp.148, 7 black & white plates. Dark crimson cloth, dustwrapper slightly rubbed with edge wear. VG/G+.
