Title: A School of Masons in 15th Century North Hertfordshire.
Description: Hertford: Hertfordshire Library Service and Hertfordshire Local History Council, 1979. 0901354155. Hertfordshire Local Studies No.2. "The word 'mason' can have several different connotations, not all clear-cut. It may mean, simply, a worker in stone, such as quarrier, rough-hewer, layer or freemason..It was from the ranks of the stonemasons that most architects were drawn; through training in geometry, he was capable of conceiving and designing a building, and of supervising its erection according to plan. For convenience in this study, the term 'mason' will apply to the ordinary stoneworker, while 'Mason', 'Master Mason' and 'architect' will refer to those capable of planning and directing the construction of buildings." Pp.39/10 figure illustrations + 18 black & white photo plates to end. Paperback. VG.
