Paul Jules Antoine Meillet was one of the most important French linguists of the early 20th century. Marcel Samuel Raphaël Cohen was an important scholar of Semitic languages and especially of Ethiopian languages. He studied the French language and contributed much to general linguistics. The authors of this work wanted to give an idea of the distribution of languages in the world, taking into account the history of these languages. They acknowledge that a collective work such as this necessarily lacks unity & that the various fields are unequally studied: from the Indo-European group, for which there is a carefully established comparative grammar, to American languages for which they have usually not gone beyond, and often not reached, the stage of description, All sorts of cases occur. On the other hand, as the authors have different training and habits of mind. it would have been futile to seek similar presentations. By imposing the same plan, the same way of treating the subject, the work would only have ended up giving the illusion of parallelism. The main thing was to mark, for each field, the current state of knowledge. The authors could only achieve this on the condition of having their freedom and conforming their presentation to the conditions specific to their special discipline.
